NJAMHAA's President and CEO Interviewed About RFK Jr.'s Plane to Reduce Antidepressant Use

May 11, 2026

In a recent interview with NorthJersey.com, Debra Wentz, PhD, NJAMHAA's President and CEO, shared her perspective on recent federal commentary regarding antidepressant use. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has expressed concern that antidepressants are being overprescribed and has emphasized diet, exercise, and psychotherapy as preferred alternatives.

Dr. Wentz acknowledged the value of a holistic approach to mental health treatment.

"We always agree that mental health treatment is not always just medication," Dr. Wentz said. "It includes diet, exercise, nutrition, sleep and rest."

Dr. Wentz also spoke to the clinical necessity of antidepressant medication for many individuals living with serious mental illness.

"Using antidepressants is not a lifestyle choice," Dr. Wentz said. "They're used by people who are depressed with suicidal ideation, who can't get out of bed because of their depression."

Dr. Wentz further addressed the distinction between antidepressant discontinuation and opioid withdrawal, noting that the two are not comparable.

"Antidepressants are not a recreational drug," Dr. Wentz said. "They're not selling antidepressants on the street for people to get high.”
