February 22, 2024

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing has shared a new report, Health Related Social Needs: An Emerging Opportunity for Behavioral Health, outlining ways to secure and improve funding to expand services addressing health related social needs (HRSN).

This report helps mental health and substance use treatment organizations (including Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics [CCBHCs]) operating in states with an approved or pending Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) HRSN Demonstration to understand approved approaches to addressing HRSN.

The report also provides information on:

  • Existing opportunities to fund HRSN-related services.
  • Examples of funding strategies from states participating in the CMS HRSN Demonstration.
  • Benefits and challenges of leveraging Medicaid as a sustainable funding source for HRSN-related services.
  • Considerations for deciding whether to provide direct services or to establish partnerships with local agencies to address HRSN.
  • Insights and recommendations from state associations, including ways providers can contribute feedback and get involved in their states' HRSN Demonstration activities.
