NJAMHAA Attends Bergen’s Promise 2026 Bergen County Legislative Breakfast

On April 17, NJAMHAA representatives Lisa Lawson, Associate Executive Director, and Jada Abdullah, Associate Health Policy Analyst, joined elected officials, community partners, and behavioral health advocates at the Bergen County Annual Legislative Breakfast, hosted by Bergen’s Promise in Paramus, New Jersey.

The event, attended by more than 400 individuals, highlighted the importance of collaboration among policymakers, service providers, community leaders, and advocates to strengthen mental health supports for young people across Bergen County.

This year’s keynote speakers, Chris and Martha Thomas, Co-founders of The Defensive Line, shared their family’s story and ongoing advocacy to advance youth suicide prevention through improved mental health communication, with a particular focus on young people of color. Their work honors the legacy of their daughter, Ella, and underscores the urgency of open dialogue and action around youth mental health.

For NJAMHAA members, these events represent a direct connection between the advocacy work of our statewide association and the county-level legislative relationships that shape funding, policy, and service delivery. Bergen’s Promise operates as Bergen County’s Care Management Organization within New Jersey’s Children's System of Care framework, serving children and families whose needs intersect with many of our member providers. Engaging with this forum strengthens our collective voice on youth mental health priorities and reinforces the cross-sector partnerships that are essential to advancing behavioral health equity in New Jersey.

NJAMHAA remains committed to taking part in regional advocacy efforts that align with our members’ mission and the communities they serve.
